The Curriculum Overview

The curriculum followed by Skegness Infant Academy is one which embraces creativity, plans to meet the needs and interests of our children and allows for events, both planned and unplanned to direct our teaching in ways which will enthuse and support our children’s learning.

We meet all the requirements of the National Curriculum which means that our FS1 and FS2 pupils follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum; our Year One and Year 2  pupils   follow the New National Curriculum introduced in September 2014. 

In Key Stage One children use play as an integral part of their learning. During Year One and into Year Two, the focus on play gradually changes to a more directed focus to support and enhance learning. Our learning is often taken outdoors into our developing outdoor area where we take part in many activities covering all aspects of the curriculum.

We firmly believe that the wide and varied range of experiences we offer helps to support our pupils. We feel that encouraging children to be open to new experiences builds on their independent skills and supports their learning, such as communication and team building alongside reading, writing and maths.

PhonicsFloppy Phonics

At the Skegness Infant Academy we follow the Letters and Sounds scheme. This begins with our youngest pupils listening to sounds in the environment and rhythms and beats.

From this foundation block our pupils move though the six phases of ‘Letters and Sounds’ and onto Support for Spelling at the end of Year 2 and on into Year 3.

Reading

Our reading scheme is based around the Oxford Reading Tree scheme  with additional texts used as well e.g. Ginn. Within our Academy we offer a wealth of books to support guided reading which, along with the Oxford Reading Tree, are book banded.
